What is iTunes U?

iTunes U is Apple's multimedia content distribution system that enables colleges and universities to make audio, video and PDF content available to students and the public through the iTunes store. Users can:

  • Listen to or view content directly from iTunes U,
  • Download content to a PC, Mac, iPod, iPhone or other mobile device that supports iTunes, and
  • Subscribe to podcasts, so that new content is automatically downloaded for later use.

What is UC Merced on iTunes U?

UC Merced on iTunes U is an iTunes U site that provides mobile access to UC Merced-related educational, marketing/communications and student-life multimedia content. Using iTunes U, users can access content such as faculty and guest lectures, athletics, student events, performing arts, campus news, features and much more. UC Merced on iTunes U allows you to connect with the university in a new way, providing all things UC Merced in just a few clicks.

Who manages UC Merced on iTunes U?

UC Merced on iTunes U is managed by the Office of Communications, a division of University Relations at UC Merced.

If you are a member of the UC Merced campus community (i.e. you have a valid UCMNetID and password) and wish to contribute content to UC Merced on iTunes U, submit your request to become a contributor. Once approved, you will be able to submit your content through this site.

Anyone. Students, faculty, staff and others in the campus community, as well as life long learners can access the content provided on UC Merced on iTunes U. And all content is accessible for free, so you can begin your learning journey with UC Merced anywhere, any time.

Do I need a Mac to access UC Merced on iTunes U?

Nope. UC Merced on iTunes U is accessible using iTunes software, which is available on computers running Windows or Mac operating systems. All you have to do is download and install the software on your computer.

What does it cost to access UC Merced on iTunes U?

Can I download and play podcasts from UC Merced on iTunes U on a Windows mobile device?

How do I install iTunes?

The process varies depending on the operating system and browser you are using; however, general instructions for Windows and Mac are linked below.

How do I access UC Merced on iTunes U?

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. From the navigation bar, click on "iTunes U."
  3. Click on "Universities and Colleges."
  4. Scroll down to the "U" section, then click on "UC Merced."

You can also search for "UC Merced" using the iTunes U search box or go directly to UC Merced on iTunes U using links on this site.

Will more content be added to UC Merced on iTunes U?

Yes. The Office of Communications is continually creating new content and is working with other campus groups to add course content to UC Merced on iTunes U in the near future. Check back regularly.

How can I automatically download new content from UC Merced on iTunes U?

You can subscribe to collections in UC Merced on iTunes U so that iTunes automatically downloads new tracks as they become available. When you find a collection you want to download, click the "Subscribe" button next to the collection artwork.

Where is the content downloaded in my iTunes?

All content from UC Merced on iTunes U will be downloaded into a "UC Merced" playlist. To access this playlist:

  • In the left-hand menu, click on "iTunes U" listed under "Library."
  • Double click on the "UC Merced" collection.

How do I access the content on my iPod or iPhone?

You must sync your iPod/iPhone with the computer on which you have downloaded UC Merced on iTunes U content, in order to access that content on your iPod/iPhone. To set up automatic syncing of iTunes U content:

  • Connect your iPod/iPhone to your computer (this will automatically launch iTunes).
  • In iTunes, click on the name of your mobile device.
  • Click the "iTunes U" tab at the top.
  • Make sure the box is checked next to "Sync iTunes U."
  • Click the checkbox next to "Automatically include," then select the settings you wish to use.
  • Click the "Apply" button (bottom right corner).

The syncing process will begin. Each time you connect your iPod/iPhone in the future, your iTunes U content will sync according to the settings you selected.

You can also manually copy content to your iPod/iPhone by dragging individual items from the "iTunes U" section of your library and dropping them on your mobile device.

Whom can contribute content to UC Merced on iTunes U?

Members of the UC Merced campus community are encouraged to publish their audio, video and PDF content through UC Merced on iTunes U.

How do I become a contributor?

Members of the UC Merced campus community with a valid UCMNetID and password can contribute content to UC Merced on iTunes U. Start by submitting your request to become a contributor. The Office of Communications will review your request and, if approved, grant you access to the content submission form.

What type of content can be submitted?

Any educational or informational content created for the purpose of supporting UC Merced's mission of teaching, research and public service is allowed on UC Merced on iTunes U. This includes content related to course lectures, faculty research, athletics, student events, performing arts, campus news or any other university-related topics that are of interest to the general public. The content should be either:

  1. Self-authored content for which you have obtained written consent from every identifiable individual featured in the content, or
  2. Copyrighted material for which you have received expressed written consent from the intellectual property owner to use on UC Merced on iTunes U.

How do I obtain written permission from individuals who appear in my video or audio content?

You must obtain written permission from every identifiable individual in your self-authored content before UC Merced can post it online. Use the following document to obtain each individual's consent. All written consent must be archived for seven years after the material is no longer available on UC Merced on iTunes U.

What metadata should I include for my content?

Metadata should be included because it makes it easier for users to find your content and helps reach users with different learning styles.

It is highly recommended you specify the following metadata for your multimedia content:

Metadata Description
Name A concise title that accurately describes the content
Artist The name of the individual featured in the content, such as the lecturer, or the name of the department that produced the content
Year The year the content was created
Album Name of the overall content collection, such as the course name or podcast series (e.g. "COGS 001: Introduction to Cognitive Science" or "Campus News")
Grouping A specific theme under which your content fits (e.g. "Spatial Cognition" or "Microbiology"

How do I submit content?

Once you have been approved to be a content contributor, you will be given access to the content submission form, which allows you to upload your files you wish to add to UC Merced on iTunes U. The Office of Communications will review your request and, if approved, grant you access to the content submission form.

Once you are approved to be a content contributor, you can begin submitting content using the content submission form. This form allows you to upload your files into a "staging" area from which it will be added to UC Merced on iTunes U. Your submission will be reviewed within three business days and, if approved, published to the UC Merced on iTunes U site for public access. You will also receive notification when your content has been added.

Where is the content stored?

Currently, all content available on UC Merced on iTunes U is hosted on Apple servers.

Can I link to specific content on UC Merced on iTunes U?

Yes, here's how:

  1. Open a basic text editor application, such as Notepad.
  2. In iTunes, navigate to the desired page, group or track.
  3. Either drag the iTunes navigation bar into your open text file or right-click (CTRL + click for Mac), then select "Copy Link."

Can I restrict access to my content?

No. All content accessible through UC Merced on iTunes U is free and fully accessible by the public.
